Stillwater Trout Fishing

If you fancy a change from the hotel’s fishing beats on the River Taw but still want to target trout, why not try one of the many stillwater fishing opportunities within an hour’s drive from the hotel. 

With  fisheries that vary in size from the intimate  5 acre Blakewell to the sizable reservoirs of  Southwest Lakes trust that range to 900 acres, you’re sure to find something that suits.


Blakewell Trout Farm

Located just north of Barstaple, about 40 minutes drive, Blakewell is open every day of the year except Christmas. Owned and operated by the Nickell brothers, they farm their own trout and salmon and produce award winning smoked trout at salmon at the Blakewell Smokehouse. Day tickets can be purchased on their website.


Wimbleball Fly Fishery

Wimbleball Lake is a 370 acre reservoir located at the southeast of Exmoor, about 50 minutes from the hotel. Stocked Rainbow and Brown trout offer great dry fly and wet fly opportunities for hard fighting fish. Day tickets can be purchased from their website.


Bratton Water Fly Fishery

This small lake fishery in North Devon is about 45 minutes from the hotel. They raise their own stock and have a reputation for being well stocked with good sized fish from 2 to 10lbs. Note that they do not permit catch and release. Payment is by cash or cheque only payable at the fishery. More information and pricing is available on their website.


Southwest Lakes Trust

South West Lakes operate nearly a dozen trout fisheries across the southwest, many of which are less than an hour from the hotel. The waters vary in size from 50 to 900 acres and depending on the water, may be stocked with Rainbow, Brown and the hard-fighting Blue Rainbow trout.
